Enhancing Animal Health Safely with DoTerra Essential Oils

Our beloved pets deserve the same care and attention when it comes to their health and well-being. Choosing holistic alternatives for our furry companions is an effective way to support them and enhance their overall quality of life.

When using using essential oils in animals, there are basic safety measures and precautions to consider. In this blog we will unlock the secrets of incorporating pure-grade essential oils into our pets' routines for their betterment while keeping it safe and simple.

Before using essential oils on your pets, it is crucial to remember a few safety guidelines:

1.Always choose high-quality, pure grade essential oils:

Unlike humans, pets, especially cats and dogs, have unique physiological systems that may react differently to certain substances. Always opt for pure-grade essential oils like those from doTERRA, ensuring they are free from harmful additives or synthetics.

doTERRA essential oils are unadulterated and have been proven time and time again to greatly benefit both people and animals alike. doTERRA even has a team of incredible veterinarians that strive to educate on how to safely and effectively use essential oils in your home and around your animals.

2.Dilution is Key.

Essential oils are highly concentrated and potent, so they must be diluted properly before use on pets. A consultation with a veterinarian or a certified animal aromatherapist can provide personalized guidance based on your pet's health status and individual needs.

My go to essential oil vet, Dr. Janet Roark, offers a practical dilution guide for pets and animals. She developed this dilution chart so you would know how to safely use essential oils in your home with your animals.

Simple and Safe Application Methods

Now, let's explore some safe and simple ways to incorporate essential oils into your pet's life:

  1. Topical Application: Dilute essential oils with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil and apply them to your pet's fur or skin. This method is ideal for targeting specific areas or addressing skin issues.

  2. Aromatic Use: Introduce essential oils into your pet's environment using a diffuser. Ensure proper ventilation and monitor your pet's response to the scent. Cats, in particular, may be sensitive to strong odors, so use sparingly and in well-ventilated spaces. Ensure your pet has the option to leave the area if they find the scent overwhelming.

  3. Massage Therapy: Combine diluted essential oils with gentle massage techniques to promote relaxation and alleviate muscle tension in your pet.

Veterinarian Dr. Janet Roark guidleline’s recommends the best rule of thumb is to “Keep it Simple and Safe”:

  • Stick with pre-diluted oils

  • If you want to dilute more, use 1-3 drops per 5 mL carrier oil.

  • For diffusing, use only 3-4 drops of an essential oil in an area where your pet cannot knock it over. Keep the door open to allow your pet to come and go as they please.

  • Avoid Tea Tree (Melaleuca) and Wintergreen topically, internally, and aromatically with cats and dogs.

  • Use common sense when applying to your pet. The same recommendations for people apply to pets - if you wouldn’t apply it to your body in a specific way, don’t do it on your pets.

  • Avoid photo-sensitive oils when your animal is in the sun.

Which oils should I avoid using on my pets?

While essential oils offer numerous benefits, its important to know several aren’t safe for pets.

What are the best essential oils for your animals?

The following are some of the essential oils I reach for when I want to support my cats Mona Lisa and Jasper, my dogs Ernie and Eva, or even Teddy, my horse:

Lavender: Known for its calming properties, lavender oil can help soothe anxious pets, promote relaxation, and assist in a good night's sleep.

Helichrysum: This essential oil is renowned for its regenerative and skin-nourishing properties. It can be beneficial for pets dealing with wounds, skin irritations, or allergies.

Frankincense: Frankincense oil offers immune support, making it a valuable addition to your pet's healthcare routine. It can also aid in soothing respiratory issues and promoting overall well-being.

Copaiba: One of the best copaiba oil benefits is it can help soothe anxious feelings, decrease stress and also has a great anti inflammatory response. Copaiba can be used fro sore muscles and arthritis as well in addition to helping to reduce pain. Copaiba is a powerful antioxidant and has huge benefits for your pets, particularly if he or she is older or has a chronic condition.

doTERRA Adaptiv®: The Adaptiv blend is an excellent choice to support your pet’s adjustment and acceptance of new or challenging situations.

Correct X: I use this blend with a base of jojoba oil, frankincense, cedarwood, helichrysum, melaleuca and lavender when Teddy, my horse, has any kind of wound. This blend has miraculous and amazing healing properties for any skin issues.

The Vitality Alchemist’s Animal Routine:

Daily Routines for my dogs Ernie and Eva:

  • My dogs Ernie and Eva’s daily ritual includes 1 drop of Frankincense diluted in kibble mix or wet food to help support their immune system, emotional system, and promote healthy cellular response.

  • When we have thunder, lightning or fireworks they actually come to me and ask for Lavender which I apply to the tips of their ears, on their bandanas, beds and also stroke them, this keeps them calm in stressful times.

Daily Routines for Teddy my Horse:

  • I mix 1 drop of Frankincense daily with his food to support emotional and immune systems, and for healthy aging.

  • Before riding I apply Intune to myself, on my temples, behind my ears and rub it into my hands, I inhale. Teddy loves to inhale from my hands as well, it helps us both for our focus and concentration.

Remember to always practice proper safety measures and consult with professionals when needed. With pure grade doTERRA essential oils you can create a harmonious environment that nurtures your pet's health and well-being and also have powerful and transformative effects to your animal’s health.
